King Geedorah – Take Me To Your Leader

Another classic album produced by hip hop underground legend MF Doom, under the pseudonym of ‘King Geedorah’. The album was released under the Big Dada record label, the hip hop division and accompanying record label of NinjaTune. With regards to the album, Daniel Dumile AKA Geedorah, states the following;

“You should listen to the album for what it is and not expect it to be like the average “rap” stuff you’re probably used to. Geedorah is a space monster. He’s not from the Earth. I made it different on purpose. A blend of ill lyrics and instrumentals. To me its way iller than any of the wack shit out now… This whole album is Geedorah’s alien perspective on humans. This is done intentionally to show the listener a mirror image of his/herself and the way we see each other. On the album we cover different subjects ranging from race issues to the neglect of children. Some might find the word “Nigger” offensive, or the line about the young girl not being able to read maybe considered a “bad taste” joke. All these insecurities are within us.”

The character King Geedorah is thought to have grown from the character that appears in the Godzilla movies, King Ghidorah, who appeared as a three-headed golden monkey.

Submotion Orchestra

Iv’e already posted one tune by these guys from Leeds (‘All Night’) but everything that comes from them seems to be gold. These next two tunes are absolute quality, so chilled out, with a groovy summery electronic vibe, and a  female vocalist (Ruby Wood) delivering textured soulful and melancholic tones ontop of the beats.

They share the same jazzy feel as The Cinematic Orchestra and quote heavy influences from them and other NinjaTune trip hoppy artists, such as Bonobo, Andreya Triana, and Amon Tobin to name just a few. They’re heavily touring the globe at the moment playing at many major festivals, including Secret Garden Party, Outlook, Greenman, Lattitude, and Shambala festival.

Monsta Island Czars – Escape From Monsta Island

Escape from Monsta Island! is the first full-length album released by the Monsta Island Czars, notably featuring Daniel Dumile under his King Geedorah/King Ghidra alias, or better known as MF Doom to many. The album is very highly regarded among underground hip-hop fans. Although the Monsta Island Czars are a creation of MF Grimm, he is absent on the entire album due to his incarceration at the time of its production and release.

The album is entirely produced by the combination of X-Ray and King Geedorah, whilst it was released under the Metal Face Record Label. Monsta Island Czars is a hip-hop group from New York City featuring MF Doom and MF Grimm among others. The rappers in the group, such as King Geedorah, Jet Jaguar, Megalon, Spiega, Kong, Gigan, Rodan, take their names from movie monsters. Their first full length album, Escape from Monsta Island!, was released in 2003 by Rhymesayers Entertainment. Many of the Czars appeared on MF Doom’s album Take Me to Your Leader under his King Geedorah alias. Most M.I.C. (as they are often abbreviated) tracks are produced by King Caesar (aka X-Ray) or King Geedorah (aka MF Doom). (Both of whom are absent from the MF Grimm American Hunger album. As MF Doom is apparently feuding with M.I.C, and specifically MF Grimm, it appears doubtful that he will produce any future tracks.)

Bonobo Feat Andreya Triana – Eyesdown

Latest single from Andreya Triana, the soulful NinjaTune signing from 2009. Really cool tune from the young lady currently touring America and making a rather large name for herself. This is the first Bonobo album for some time, is his fourth studio effort and dropped in the UK just last month, it can be found under the name of ‘Black Sands’.

Emika – Drop The Other

Emika, signed to the kennington based trip-hop label Ninjatune is going to be massive on the underground scene in 2010. Her debut single ‘Drop the Other’ comes out on January 18th, and is set be huge. Emika describes herself as “making pop, but with a hard edge, playing different sounds and intensities against each other. I try to stay on the fence, leaving from for the listener to create a sense of what its about. It’s all about tension for me.” As her Myspace page quotes, her music revives “eerie, near-classical piano which collides into glitched-out edits and skittering drum patterns, while speaker-shattering lows rub against Emika’s own hushed, cryptic vocals, the iconoclastic blend marking her an artist that makes a habit of defying expectation. Just when you think you know what you’re hearing, she flips the script: the cinematic sound architecture evokes the deepest techno, but the tempo moves too slow, the beats too jagged; the sub-bass, meanwhile, could shudder the most underground dubstep club, but it’s paired with haunting, syncopated vocal hooks that suggest Aaliyah’s work with Timbaland taken to its darkest extreme.” Check out her Myspace page here http://www.myspace.com/emikamyspace, if you want to find out some more about the lady and her music. But for now, here’s ‘Drop the Other’, and the Scuba Vulpine remix, enjoy.

Andreya Triana

A great find for 2009,  the Brighton based Soul / Folk / Acoustic singer and songwriter Andreya Triana is set to release her debut album in 2010,and is produced by the legendary trip hop producer Bonobo. Andreya is signed to the NinjaTune record label, along with Bonobo and Fink who she also co-writes with. Andreya’s been on the music scene for some time and has collaborated with a variety of top-notch artists including Bonobo, Mr Scruff, TM Juke & The Jack Baker Trio, Natural Self, Kidkanevil and Flying Lotus, but 2010 will see the Ninja Tune signee stepping out on her own and releasing her debut album sometime in the spring. The first single from the project, ‘Lost Where I Belong’, is a fantastic slice of chilled out soul, with Andreya’s gorgeous vocal laid over a great track. The song is co-written by yet another Ninja Tune artist, Fink. The single is officialy released on 8th February 2010. (Click the pics to check out ‘Lost Where i Belong’ & my favourite of Andreya’s, ‘The Keeper’, also produced by Bonobo).

The Cinematic Orchestra – Man With A Movie Camera

Is there any better way to begin, jazzy, soulful, a classic in every way, its an absolute must have in any music lovers collection. The album comprises the soundtrack to a re-released version of the ground-breaking 1929 silent documentary film, Man with a Movie Camera  from RClick for Self-Titled Trackussian director Dziga Vertov. The Cinematic Orchestra were commissioned to record the score to play as the opening event in Porto, Portugal’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2001. The performance was met with the highest possible praise, and is still presented around the globe at various festivals. I was lucky enough, whilst interning at NinjaTune, (the record label the orchestra are signed to) to see them perform the album live at the Roundhouse in Camden. It was truly stunning, and possibly the best live show i have ever attended. A personal favourite tune has to be the last track on the album, and a song that also features on Cinematic’s previous album ‘Everyday’, the song called ‘All Things’ is mesmeric, beautifully created and comprises the perfect meloncholy mood for a winter’s walk. On Man With a Movie Camera ‘All Things’ is played as an instrumental version, but on the previous album, accompanying vocals are majestically presented by the one and only, a true British hip hop great, Roots Manuva, who is signed to the sub label of NinjaTune, Big Dada, a label that Wiley has also released albums under. So here it is, (click the pictures) give it a listen, and leave a comment. Enjoy!
